Building Omaha’s Future Leaders

A STEM Professional You Should Know
Theresa Woods is an intern at the Omaha STEM Ecosystem. With a degree in Graphic Design, visual narrative is her passion. After learning Graphic Design is categorized as earning a Bachelors of Science, she looked further into STEM and how it applies to her work.
Art is full of STEM principles and processes. Observing, cataloging, and designing new ways of telling a story through one or more images is a process that uses science, technology, engineering, and math. Any artists out there who think STEM has nothing to do with them ought to give it a closer look. Have you measured out the amount of paper or clay for a project? Do you observe the world around you for inspiration? Do you use a computer to draw digitally? These are all ways STEM helps develop the art process.
Theresa is a freelance graphic artist who takes commissions for anything from book covers to business logos, layout and character design. Got a message you want to share with the world? Contact her and get started!
Math and Medicine Recap
The STEM Ecosystem was excited to partner with Clarkson College in offering the Math Teaching Circle – Math and Medicine. This event was hands-on with a variety of stations set up for activities connecting math principle to healthcare concepts. Topics covered included math behind the logarithmic growth of bacteria, algebraic equations and information when charting radiology exposure reading and calculation of infusion rate for fluid replacement.
Each participant went home with a digital packet of lesson plans to utilize in their classroom. For the culminating activity, the Clarkson staff conducted a tour of their state of the art Interprofessional Learning Center.
The Math Teaching Circle is in partnership with the UNO Mathematics Department and the OSE. For more information on how you can be a part of this series, contact: Julie Sigmon Julie.sigmon@omahazoo.com
