    Madagascar Update

The community of Kianjavato and the Madagascar Biodiversity Partnership hit another milestone! The Malagasy government officially recognized the newly established VOI Taratr’i Vatovavy. VOIs are community-run organizations staffed with representatives elected from local villages. They work together to create a set of rules that govern the use of forest resources. The VOIs shoulder a lot of responsibility such as patrolling forests, enforcing laws, controlling fires, and conducting community outreach. At the inauguration event, the local women’s association performed a traditional song, school children walked in a parade, and MBP’s own Fredo Tera was interviewed on national TV. This VOI was made possible through the financial support of the Save Our Species fund, and the incredible work of dedicated staff at MBP and the deeply committed people of Kianjavato and surrounding Communes.
