    Cell Culture Contamination Costs:
Exploring Types, Effects and Statistics; and Options for Prevention

    Tues., July 14
    2-3 PM CDT

Contamination by microorganisms, other cell types and volatile organic chemicals is a recurring problem in all cell culture applications. Statistics show that contamination is much more prevalent than most cell culturists acknowledge.

    In this seminar, we:
    • Review the different types of cell culture contamination and their effects on cells
    • Explore the ways that contamination occurs and offer advice for preventing occurrences, including some steps that few labs take on a routine basis
    • Compare and contrast contamination control options offered on different CO2 incubators, including their relative efficacy

    About the Speaker

Mary Kay Bates is a Senior Global Cell Culture Scientist with Thermo Fisher Scientific, where she provides cell culture expertise to colleagues and customers. Her knowledge is based on twenty years of experience in academic and industrial cell and molecular biology labs focusing on cancer and gene therapy, authoring several publications. Mary Kay holds an M.S. in microbiology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Who is ready for summer?! We 100% are! Here at the Omaha Conservatory, we’ve been actively monitoring the coronavirus situation and we are sending regular updates to our community. We are closely following state and local health guidelines and will notify camp registrants of any changes to plans for OCMI. A few important things of note:

    • We have extended our payment due date for camp registrants to July 1 in consideration of health and financial impacts of COVID-19.
    • There’s been some major changes to the format of half-day camp. Tuition has dropped in order to accommodate families in our rapidly changing environment with consideration to financial challenges.

  • Smithsonian Science Education Center Virtual Leadership Development Event
    All day
    July 28, 2020-July 30, 2020

The Smithsonian Science Education Center is holding its first fully virtual leadership development event this summer, from July 28-30. As part of the SSEC’s Leadership and Assistance for Science Education Reform (LASER) programming, the Smithsonian K-12 STEM Education: Action Planning Institute (API) will tackle the challenge of ensuring science/STEM education remains a priority in classrooms and communities during COVID-19 and beyond. During this fully customizable program, live and asynchronous sessions will foster critical conversations on topics most relevant to K-12 science education today such as social emotional supports, equity and accessibility, and facilitating three-dimensional science investigations remotely.

This institute is offered at no cost and open to educators, parents, community members, and industry stakeholders dedicated to ensuring continuity in K-12 STEM education for all students. Participating individuals and teams will make meaningful connections between knowledge and practice and will, most importantly, develop an action plan to guide their return to school in the fall. Our goal is to make certain that students from all demographics receive equitable access to inquiry-centered science/STEM education whether learning remotely or learning in school with adjusted schedules.

    **UPDATE**

Ambassador fund aid is still available for those who need help with the cost of camp!

  • Smithsonian Science Education Center Virtual Leadership Development Event
    All day
    July 29, 2020-July 30, 2020
